Sensei Mel
I’m Sensei Mel, and I’ve been teaching karate since 2016.
My own karate journey began in 2010 after enrolling my five-year-old son in classes. Watching from the sidelines, I remember thinking, “That looks like fun, but I could never do it!”Eventually, I found the courage to sign up myself — and the rest, as they say, is history.
I love the unique balance of physical and mental challenge that karate provides. Training has improved my fitness, strength, flexibility, and reflexes, while also sharpening my mind by enhancing memory, focus, and mental resilience.
It has continually pushed me beyond my comfort zone, helping me build confidence and discipline over the years. As a sensei, one of the most rewarding aspects is watching students grow in both skill and self-confidence as they progress through the ranks.
But above all, I love that karate is a sport where people of all ages and ability levels can train together, supporting and learning from each other. Families can share the experience side by side.
I began training with my son 16 years ago when he was just a child, and now, although he’s grown up and married, we still train, and now teach, together.
